Beagle
Cheerful, sociable scent hound with an excellent nose and a loud bark.
MediumVery activeVereinigtes KnigreichGood with kids
Origin & history
Bred in England for pack hunting hares, with roots going back to the Middle Ages; the name likely comes from the Old French "begueule" (loud mouth).
Care
Needs plenty of exercise and scent work, or becomes loud and restless. Short coat, minimal grooming.
Ideal environment
Needs a secure garden or a leash outdoors, as a very strong nose tempts it to wander off. Not suited to apartment life without a lot of exercise.
Feeding
Strictly control portions - beagles are very prone to weight gain and love to beg for food.
Health
Prone to weight gain, ear infections (floppy ears), and epilepsy. Check ears regularly.
