Origin & history

Named after King Charles II of England, known in the 17th century for his fondness for small spaniels; today's form emerged in the early 20th century through selective breeding.

Needs regular brushing, especially on the ears and legs. Enjoys moderate walks, no extreme exercise.

Ideal environment

Ideal for apartments and calmer households, very people-oriented and dislikes being left alone for long.

Feeding

Normal portions, but watch for a tendency toward weight gain given its low exercise drive.

Health

Prone to heart disease (mitral valve disease) and syringomyelia. Regular heart checkups are important.
