Goldfish
Classic, hardy ornamental fish in many colors and shapes, the most popular aquarium pet for centuries.
Origin & history
Bred from the wild silver Prussian carp in China over 1000 years ago into an ornamental form; spread worldwide via Japan and later Europe, one of the oldest domesticated fish species.
Care
Needs a large, well-filtered tank (min. 100 liters for the first fish) - goldfish grow larger than most people expect. Regular partial water changes are important.
Ideal environment
Coldwater fish, needs no heater, but plenty of swimming space and oxygen. Group housing with several tankmates recommended.
Feeding
Omnivorous: high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with vegetables like peas and occasional live food.
Health
Prone to swim bladder problems from improper feeding and fin rot from poor water quality. Growth rate varies with tank size.
