Origin & history

Bred in 19th-century England by Reverend John Russell for fox hunting: small enough to follow foxes into their dens, yet bold and tireless.

Care

Needs plenty of exercise and activity, or becomes restless or destructive. Short coat, low grooming needs.

Ideal environment

Needs a securely fenced garden due to a strong prey drive; apartment living only works with a great deal of daily exercise.

Feeding

Activity-matched food due to high energy needs. Watch dental health, as terriers are prone to tartar buildup.

Health

Generally robust, but eye disease (lens luxation) and patellar luxation do occur.
