Origin & history
Native to the rice paddies and slow-moving waters of Thailand, where it was traditionally bred for fighting competitions; brought to Europe as an ornamental fish in the 19th century.
Care
Needs a warm, calm tank (min. 20 liters) with plants and hiding spots. A lid is important, as bettas can jump.
Ideal environment
Males must be housed alone - together they fight to the death. Needs warm water (24-28°C) and little current.
Feeding
Carnivorous: special betta food or small insects/larvae, in small portions several times a day.
Health
Prone to fin rot and fungal infections from poor water quality. Breathes air at the surface thanks to its labyrinth organ.
