Origin & history
Native to the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores; brought to Europe by Spanish sailors from the 15th/16th century and selectively bred for song and color ever since.
Care
Clean the cage regularly, offer a bathing option. Avoid direct drafts.
Ideal environment
Can be kept alone (unlike many other ornamental birds), but needs the largest cage possible with daylight.
Feeding
Seed mix formulated for canaries, supplemented with some greens and occasionally egg food during molting.
Health
Susceptible to respiratory infections and mite infestations. Regular observation for behavioral changes is important.
