Originating in the US state of Maine, likely from crosses between longhaired cats and local farm cats; one of North America's oldest natural cat breeds.
Care
Needs regular brushing due to the long coat. Very social, enjoys company.
Ideal environment
Adapts well to apartment or house life with outdoor access, enjoys company, and is not very shy.
Feeding
Large breed: controlled growth as a kitten matters, then balanced adult portions.
Health
Prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Heart screenings recommended.
