Origin & history
Native to the Andes in South America, where indigenous peoples kept them for millennia, originally also as a food source, before arriving in Europe in the 16th century.
Care
Short coat needs little care. Clean the cage/enclosure regularly, trim nails occasionally.
Ideal environment
NEVER keep alone - guinea pigs are group animals and need at least one companion. Needs a spacious enclosure with hiding spots.
Feeding
Fresh vegetables and hay daily, special guinea pig food fortified with vitamin C.
Health
Needs daily vitamin C through diet (cannot produce it themselves), or deficiencies can develop.
