Persian

Calm, easygoing cat with a long, dense coat and a distinctive flat face.

MediumCalmIranGood with kids

Origin & history

Brought from the Middle East to Europe as early as the 17th century, further bred in the UK and USA into today's long-haired form.

Care

Daily brushing is essential, or the coat mats quickly. Clean the face regularly (tear ducts).

Ideal environment

Perfect for calm indoor households; no outdoor access needed given the flat face and coat maintenance.

Feeding

High-quality food in moderate portions, as it is not very active and thus prone to weight gain.

Health

Prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and breathing problems due to the flat face. Genetic PKD screening is worthwhile.
