Shetland Pony

Origin & history
Native to the Shetland Islands of Scotland, where it adapted over centuries to a harsh climate and sparse pasture; originally used as a working pony in mines, today popular worldwide as a family and driving pony.
Care
Needs plenty of exercise and activity despite its small size, otherwise prone to weight gain and behavioral issues. Winter coat needs regular grooming.
Ideal environment
Needs year-round pasture access, very weather-hardy. Pasture should be nutrient-poor to avoid weight gain.
Feeding
Very undemanding: sparse hay as the base, almost no concentrate feed needed - strict feeding control due to laminitis risk.
Health
Very prone to laminitis and obesity on rich pasture - grazing often needs to be restricted. Otherwise a robust, long-lived breed.
